We only add a region here when we have enough first-hand experience to make it useful. No empty destination pages just to fill the map.
Golden Bay
Tākaka Hill, caves, limestone forest, extraordinary water and a wild exposed coast.
Marlborough
Beach camping, coastal tracks and a boat journey into Queen Charlotte Sound/Tōtaranui.
Arthur's Pass
Mountain beech forest, braided river valleys and one of our first proper winter mountain walks.
Hokitika Area
Old gold workings, mining tunnels, water races and forest that has spent a long time taking the landscape back.
Golden Bay
This was the first region where one adventure quickly turned into enough stories for a whole collection.
We crossed Tākaka Hill for our first via ferrata, then kept finding completely different reasons to stop. A giant cave, a little limestone forest, remarkably clear springs and finally the exposed coast at Wharariki Beach.
Marlborough
Marlborough gave us two very different versions of being close to the water.
At Pukatea/Whites Bay we could camp beside the coast and explore tracks straight from the campsite. From Picton, the adventure moved onto the water and into Queen Charlotte Sound/Tōtaranui, where Motuara Island became the main destination.
Arthur's Pass
This is still a small destination collection, but Bealey Spur earned its place here.
Our winter walk climbed through mountain beech forest toward huge views over the Waimakariri and Bealey river valleys. We did not need to reach the hut for the day to feel complete.
We will expand this section when we have more first-hand Arthur's Pass adventures worth adding. One good guide is better than five empty destination pages.
West Coast
The first West Coast guides took us into places shaped by gold mining and then almost swallowed again by forest.
Tunnel Terrace gave us old tail-race tunnels, gold workings and dripping forest. Blue Spur felt rougher, harder to follow and even more reclaimed by the bush.
